Welcome to a brand-new series in which we will tell you all about the buildings you will have at your disposal as a ruler of an ancient Greek Polis.
This time we will take a closer look at two structures without which the city’s further development would be simply impossible. And although their scopes of activity differ from each other, they are directly related to two key resources you’ll need during your reign… so grab your tools and make notes, constructor!
Lumber mill
Planks are one of the most important materials needed to rise up most of the buildings in your city. In addition, they are used in the manufacture of wax tablets and furniture, without which wealthier citizens cannot do. You will need them both in the initial phase of the game, when your Polis will be just a provincial town, and later on, when it becomes a large metropolis.
That being said, it is essential to keep your Lumber Mill working continuously. To do so, you must first supply it with wood from nearby forests or trade routes. The delivered wood will be processed and your warehouses will soon be fulfilled with precious planks.
There is no great philosophy here, to be honest… only heavy, tedious, yet rewarding work. Lumber Mill employees know that they are one of the pillars of the city’s development.
Granary
Food production is undoubtedly a crucial matter, however, without the place of its storage, it loses its importance. This is what architects developed the Granary for! Spoken Granary is a building where you can store the produced edible goods and use them later in further production, trade or to feed the citizens.
If you want your Granary to function properly, make sure you provided it with road connections to service and production buildings. Only then will different goods flow into your inventory. You must remember to provide enough storage space for the food produced by your people – when your Granary runs out of free space, your Polis may suffer a loss, as the smooth flow of eatable goods will be disrupted. In such case, another one should be built.
As a ruler, you can freely manage the contents of your Granaries and decide which types of goods can enter and leave their walls.
In the following parts of the series, we will return to you with a description of many other structures that will ensure the security, well-being and development of your city. Stay tuned!
