The Ruler's Manual #9 - Random Events
Make no mistake, life in Ancient Greece was full of surprises! For what would the life of a ruler be if it were completely predictable and organized? Huge celebrations, hostile raids, weather changes, or social problems may fall on you completely unannounced, which can change the whole course of your empire’s history. Who knows? Perhaps such events will save your city from trouble… or on the contrary – they will plunge it into chaos and destruction. Either way, we believe the Random Events system makes your adventure with Builders of Greece even more attractive and replayable!
Today, we will learn more about how to deal with such Random Events and try to predict the unpredictable. Here we go!
Random Events are both an opportunity and threat
Let’s start with the fact that it’s not like all Random Events that happen to your empire are bad or harmful. Not at all – some of them can benefit your society in a significant way. Needless to say, your subjects will be delighted once they happen! Positive Random Events are a great break from the long days full of work and other daily errands, so keep your fingers that they will occur once in a while.
We are sure you’re curious what positive, unexpected events you can count on π§ You better get ready to praise Gods, host some ancient celebrities, and feast!
All right, let’s get to the point. Among the positive events that can affect your city, we can mention the treasure hunt! Well… maybe not “exactly” a treasure hunt, but if you’re lucky enough, your builders may come across the unusual find. During the construction of a new building, their shovels can hit strange wooden containers π²
The dirt beneath your city turned out to hide buried treasure, which is most likely a remnant of the former inhabitants of this land. You could keep it to expand your empire’s treasury or distribute it to citizens to show them your kindness. What it will be? The choice is yours!
Positive events can also result from grassroots, social needs. From time to time, the residents of your Polis need a break from hard work and their daily errands. And what is better to forget about the hardships of everyday life than a Festival? π₯³ Of course, the final decision whether the festival will take place or not rests on your shoulders. Will you be willing to let the city celebrate? Remember, that satisfaction and joy of subjects come at a price – for a while your workshops, farms, and other production buildings will suspend their work, not to mention the coins that you will have to spend to cover the costs of this great event.
If you want to expand your city even further or need extra hands to work, you can count on Refugees. At random times, they may knock on the door of your palace and ask for shelter. If you decide to accept them, they will become your loyal subjects and happily devote their skills for the glory of the empire π Before you offer them a home, make sure you have the right conditions to do so! We don’t want that extra mouths to feed ruin your supplies, do we?
You never know what to expect
Of course, there is also the other sides of this coin and some of the Random Events pose a threat. Let’s take a closer look at the most obvious one, which is enemy attack on your town. The rulers of neighboring city-states may see their opportunity in plundering your wealth for themselves and decide to launch an assault on your Polis β Such attacks are always fateful, so be sure to keep a strong, numerous army!
The whim of the gods can be just as dangerous β‘ From time to time, the soothsayers may inform you that the rough sea is a sign of Poseidon’s wrath. Whatever the reasons for the high waves, going to sea is not the best idea at the moment. But what about our brave fishermen? And how long can your city last without one of the main sources of its food – fish? Time will tell…
Another difficulty facing the ruler is public discontent. If famine, high taxes, poverty, or other serious problems occur in your empire, people may take to the streets and chant against your reigns. To make things even worse π₯ riots are generating more and more damage with each passing moment.
In this situation, there are only two ways out – appease them with silver or violently suppress the subversives.
How to deal with Random Events
Unfortunately, some events are completely out of your control. However, there are a few rules that will help you control their effects! To mitigate the damage caused by Random Events, you should always keep your treasury full of coins, your warehouses and granaries full of goods, and keep your people safe and happy. Sounds easy, right? π Right…
In the following parts of the series, we will return to you with descriptions of many other important mechanics and tips that will help you become the greatest ruler of all time! As always – stay tuned.
